In yet another first for Billingham Juniors, we have entered The Teesside Futsal League. We have entered not 1 but 2 teams at U9.
The kids were given the chance to pick the names for their teams, breaking away from "Lions, Juniors, Blues and Royals". In great style they came up with WARRIORS and TORNADOS.
The teams came about following the great sessions set up with Martin Bennington by Tom Patrick, the then U9 manager. The kids' enthusiasm for Futsal has grown over the last 2 years, and two of the coaches, Ash Taylor & Si Founde, approached the club with the proposition of entering teams into the Teesside Futsal League.
The teams will play on every second Tuesday starting in September out of a Thornaby central venue. Both teams will wear the U9 team strips.
Martin Bennington Goalkeepers is credited with introducing the club to Futsal and leading the sessions for the current U9s as well as an older group.
Futsal is a football-based game played on a hardcourt like a basketball court, smaller than a football pitch, and mainly indoors. It has similarities to five-a-side football and indoor football.
Futsal is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutions are permitted. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, it is played on a hard court surface marked by lines; walls or boards are not used. It is played with a smaller, harder, lower-bounce ball than association football. The surface, ball and rules favour ball control and passing in small spaces.
The game emphasizes control, improvisation, creativity and technique.
Good luck to both teams and coaches Ash & Si.
